Leaf Cuttings

Begonias are an excellent example of a plant best propagated by leaf cuttings. Cut a leaf into sections, with the edge of the leaf forming the top of the cutting. The base of the cutting should be longer than the top and include one of the leaf’s larger veins. One of the best rooting mediums to use is perlite, because of its excellent capacity for drainage. Using a knife or other slender tool, make a narrow opening in the perlite that corresponds to the length of the cutting’s base. Dip the base of the leaf cutting into rooting hormone, then stick it vertically into the perlite. Water well and enclose in a plastic bag. Monitor the humidity — you shouldn’t have a great deal of condensation inside the bag, because begonias are prone to rot. Keep cuttings out of direct sunlight; an eastern window is ideal.
