FARMLAND

With rolling fields, neat hedgerows and smooth hills like snooker tables, it’s easy to see our Great British countryside as a bucolic wonderland – surely it must be teeming with life? Sadly not. Over the past 40 years agriculture has intensified, and working side by side with nature has vanished. In its place has risen a style of mass production that does not care for wildness or the animals that survive in the fields and the spaces between. Gone are life-rich hedgerows and non-profit-making wild spaces. The loss in abundance is stark. Pesticides have killed off so many bugs that it is apocalyptic; a couple of decades ago a drive in the countryside would have splattered your windscreen with all kinds of creepy crawlies, but now the bonnet will be as clean as a kingfisher’s beak. We are seeing the results of years of these farming practices in bird surveys and their brutal readings; every countryside bird with a few exemptions (Jackdaws, Rooks, Goldfinches and Wood Pigeons) have been hit hard and place on the Red List. We can’t just blame mass agriculture though; market forces are also responsible for this high-octane growth.
