Culture

Civilizing a Sasquatch is no easy task. Just ask Mike Thompson. During his spare time, Mike developed a cultural enrichment program for Satch. Learning basketball was not enough. There was more to life than athletics, Mike decided.

Mike enjoyed walking down various Las Vegas streets, side-by-side, with his new, unique friend.

That city with its huge entertainment industry seemed a perfect place for Satch. Many who saw him made comments like, “Where’s the costume party?” They probably thought it was just some oversized guy in a weird costume. Sometimes kids would squeal, in delight, as they recognized Mike, “Hey, mom, look! It’s Mike Thompson. He’s my favorite Bandit player.” Most everyone would stare a moment at the unusual pair, and several mouths dropped open in surprise or fright.

One man, trying to impress his lady friend, said, “Say, look. That big guy is part of the Siegfried and Roy show…you know, the one with the white tigers. I remember seeing him several years ago. He doesn’t do much—just sort of stands around looking mean. He didn’t scare me, though. I can handle his type.”

Early one Sunday morning, Mike said, “Let’s go to church.” He helped Satch into his sharpest clothes—a pair of blue trousers and a blue-and-white striped tee shirt. After Mike dressed, they took the elevator down to the garage floor. Mike’s golden convertible stood near the far corner of the garage.

After crossing the crowded room, side-by-side, Mike opened the passenger door for Satch. Chrome, glass, knobs and dials lured Satch inside. He hunched over and crawled into the front seat. Immediately, he began playing with the radio, the automatic gearshift lever, signal light lever and the clock.

Once out on the street, Mike became worried that Satch couldn’t sit up straight in the car. He was too tall. Suddenly, Mike’s full-sized car seemed too small. He felt thankful that he didn’t own a VW Bug. As they drove along, Satch’s head and neck tilted over toward Mike.

Soon, they pulled up beside the Edgemont Methodist Church. Mike helped Satch climb out of the car, and the pair walked inside. Several people sat with bowed heads. An excited gasp swept through the worshippers as they began noticing Satch. Then they started praying harder than ever.

“Lord, save me. I know I’ve been a horrible sinner, but don’t let me die this way,” pleaded one.

Another took a different road to salvation, “I repent, Lord. I repent. Just get that thing out of here!”

Still a third saw Satch more positively, “Praise God Almighty! It’s the second coming of the Lord!”

Mike could not help noticing that some of the worshippers were staring at them with angry looks on their faces. He said, “Come on, Satch. I can tell we’re not wanted around here.”

They exited, quickly, hopped into the car and drove away without looking back. A few miles down the street, Mike pulled up to the curb, stopped and pushed the button for lowering the convertible top. He had become concerned that his large friend was looking too uncomfortable.
