Chances are that, if you hand children batteries and motors, they’ll figure out how to make something work. Motors may spin and whiz. Pulleys may drive gears. Bells may even go off. The battery holder was clipped to circuit boards, gears, and even casings.

Some kids found motors and clipped on the wires. Eventually, they discovered that the motors worked when they connected the black wires to black and the red to red.

MATERIALS

Battery holders (for C or D cells)

Batteries (C or D)

Small alligator clips

Electrical tape

Motors from gadgets that kids have taken apart (see Disassembly Line, page 91)
