MARRIAGE AND COMMUNITY

The first mention of a wedding ceremony celebrated at San Giovanni a Porta Latina comes in the testimony of Geronimo, one of the youths associated with Pinto, probably living under the guise of a hermit. This appears to be his first interrogation and he cracks almost immediately. In response to the judge’s second question, concerning the point in time at which he went to the church, Geronimo states that he did so on the day of the arrest, intending, since he was unwell, to continue on to the hospital at Saint John Lateran. He then adds, unprompted,

My Lord, I want to tell you the truth, which is this, that when it was discussed by Agilar, Robles, and other companions, and Pinto was also involved, to marry Vittorio to Brother Gioseffe who lives at San Giuliano, and Robles promised he would pay for the banquet when the wedding took place, it was agreed that it should take place the following Sunday, which was the one when we were arrested. It’s true that the wedding wasn’t performed because Br. Gioseffe fell ill and was at the hospital of San Giovanni in Laterano, but the banquet took place, that is to say, Robles had brought the food for it—chickens, roosters, meat, cheese, and such like.

Io Signore ve voglio dire la verita la quale è questa che essendose trattato da Agilar da Robles et da altri compagni che ce intervenne ancora Pinto di fare sposare il Vittorio con fra Gioseffe che sta a san Giuliano et Robles promese de voler pagare il banchetto, quando si faceva lo sposalitio ce fu restato d’acordo che si dovesse fare la Domenica sequente che fu quella quando noi fussemo presi, è ben vero che lo sposalitio non fu fatto perche fra Gioseffe se amalo et stava allo hospitale de san Giovanni Laterano ma il banchetto fu fatto cioe Robles haveva portata la robba per farlo che era gallina pollastro carne caso et simil cose.
