Not all salads are created equal
Some people believe that anything with the word ‘salad’ in its name has to be healthy and scarfing it down will help them lose weight. That’s far from truth. There are ingredients added to salads that are best left off when you’re trying to get in shape. Bacon bits can be like little fat bombs (of course, if you’re making them yourself, you can cut all the fat off and cook them in a non-stick pan). Leave the buttery croutons to one side as well. Small amounts of cheese – particularly low-fat varieties or goat’s cheese – can add extra flavour, but avoid salads that have a lot of any type of cheese.
Give it some crunch
For good reason, people love a crouton in their salad and we don’t blame them. As they say on Masterchef, it’s all about the texture. Use good sourdough and brush it lightly with olive oil and garlic before toasting on a baking tray in the oven. Just use a few and it’s not going to hurt your diet. You could also try a crumbled Jatz or some crunchy Asian noodles for a little extra crunch. Remember the mantra though: not too much.
