Parish priests were expected to insist on the observance of these regulations, and they succeeded so well that some secondary feasts were reduced to minor celebrations. Moreover, the pika between the partiti in Żabbar and Qrendi was so violent that the secondary feasts there were suppressed completely.2 This served as a stem warning to others.

2 In Żabbar the devotion to St. Michael, the secondary patron, died out almost completely, though the pika between the bands has persisted. But in Qrendi the devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes, the secondary patron, has continued as strong as ever. In 1958 the Archbishop reinstated the confraternity dedicated to her, which his predecessor suppressed in 1935, but the partit band is still not allowed to play for her feast.
