Thérèse Receives Her Habit

After Thérèse had been a novice for six months, the community decided that they would accept Thérèse as a member of their community. At that time, however, Louis was ill, and for this reason Thérèse’s reception of the habit was delayed until January of 1889. In the meantime Thérèse experienced dryness in her prayer life. When January came, Thérèse’s father was in a much healthier position than he had been in a long time. Thérèse was dressed in a white gown, ornate with Alençon lace and a crown of lilies. Louis walked his daughter down the aisle to give her away formally to Jesus, who would be Thérèse’s spouse. When the Mass was over, she received the brown Carmelite habit and a white cloak. Her new name was Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus of the Holy Face.
