While London was understandably anxious to acquire information on the true course of events surrounding the PRUNUS debacle, it is surprising that, amidst the grave uncertainty, they sought to put Tony and ‘Bloom’ in contact. Even allowing for the longstanding misapprehension that the ‘Bishop’ set had been operating for PIMENTO, they should have perceived that any contact was fraught with danger. In the light of the disaster that had befallen the GILBERT and PRUNUS networks because of their association, SOE’s attempt to link PIMENTO with the compromised circuit seems decidedly foolhardy. Moreover, no mention was made in the message to Bertholet of London’s doubts concerning the anomalies in ‘Bloom’s’ code checks.

No sooner had F Section sent the May Day telegram than fresh news from France necessitated a second message to Bertholet:

Have just been advised from the field that following various arrests in Toulouse British organiser though at liberty is closely watched. This may refer either to Eugene or even to Alphonse organisation in Toulouse. Germans will not take any action before Fifteenth May when they think stores delivery is to take place. Suggest you tell Alphonse with all security to warn Eugene of possible danger and advise him to leave letting Alphonse know where he is going.98
