Love him or loathe him the mole is a fascinating and mysterious little creature. He has a long and colourful history and has long been the subject of myth and legends. A common superstition was that to carry the dried front feet of a mole in one’s pocket would ward of rheumatism (a custom still carried on in parts of East Anglia). The mole was also responsible for a famous royal catastrophe, causing the accidental death of William III Prince of Orange. In 1702 the King’s horse (named Sorrell), stumbled on a molehill while riding in Hampton Court Park, the King, who fell from his horse, died of his injuries sixteen days later. The molehill is portrayed at the base of the statue of the King in St James’s Square in London. As a result of his exploits, the mole was held in high esteem by the Jacobites and a favourite toast of theirs was to, “The Little Gentleman in Black Velvet”.

Since the last outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease, when rural pest controllers were unable to gain access to vast areas of countryside, there has been a massive rise in the mole population. Combined with the exceptionally wet and mild winters of late, this has lead to the almost unprecedented mole numbers we see today. So if ever there was a good time to learn the art of mole trapping, then this must be it. Don’t give up if you are not successful for the first few attempts with the traps, practice makes perfect as they say, if you persevere you will become proficient in the end.
