Reyna Teaches Solo: Leadership and Commitment

» OB Sala, Panajachel, Guatemala, August 2012

The point of the teachers’ meeting between training sessions was to further coalesce as a team and to establish Reyna in the position as the project’s coleader. OB’s director Ramona recognized that Jody and I could not direct the project’s growth from Wisconsin and, during the workshops, she observed Reyna’s leadership skills over and over again. These qualities, along with our easy rapport and Reyna’s command of English, made her the obvious choice to become the project’s coleader. In addition, she had an uncanny ability to “read” people’s intentions and had garnered the women’s trust and respect because she was evenhanded and approachable. Jody and I welcomed the news of Reyna’s ascension as coleader. Over the course of the teacher training, she had become the cultural barometer from which key decisions were made, decisions that were beyond Jody’s and my capacity as extranjeras to fully comprehend. Not insignificantly, Reyna made me a better teacher. She helped reorganize the sequence of my lesson plans to successfully build upon the women’s knowledge and experiences, brick by brick. She also knew when to push them harder—and when to pull back.

Reyna had a lot to accomplish during this daylong teachers’ meeting. The new teachers would each soon recruit a new student, and Reyna wanted to discuss the personal characteristics of the prospective recruits. Her interest in carefully choosing new students was piqued in response to an eruption of chisme (gossip) in one of the rug-hooking groups. Going forward, she wanted to create a community of motivated rug-hooking participants within a culture dedicated to equality among peers and a shared sense of responsibilities, including leadership. Reyna knew that self-anointed leaders, unwilling to share control, characterized groups plagued by chisme. Thinking ahead to the selection of new recruits, Reyna wanted to nip chisme in the bud.
