Chapter 3 – Sample Patterns for Rug Hooking

Now that you’ve learned the things you need for rug hooking, you can start learning the basic instructions about the actual rug hooking. But before you start with that, you must learn first the different styles that you can experiment with. Once you get yourself familiarized with these basic designs, it will be much easier for you to come up with your own unique designs.

Primitive Design

This is the design that is easiest to learn. You just have to listen to that inner child in you and create a child-like design. You may start with stitching flower designs inside a plain or patterned vase. Cartoon characters are also fun to make. Try looking for inspirations from children’s coloring books. You may copy patterns there or you can create your own.

Primitive design is the best pattern to begin with as you are still starting to learn rug hooking. In fact, this is the most famous pattern that rug hookers choose.

Realistic Design

Realistic art is also doable in designing your rugs. Realistic designs include portraits of people, animals, 3D objects and others. If you want a design that portrays a detailed picture, try out realistic designs. Although it is more difficult to do than the primitive style, realistic design looks more alive. Rug hookers who choose this design make use of different shades of colors. They dye the wools or yarns in order to achieve the different shades of color they want.

Pictorial Design

If you are a nature lover, you may want to try out the pictorial design. You can choose from different sceneries such as landscape, seascape cityscape, sky, starry night, sunset, and more. Rug hookers usually use a wider size of wool in order to create a more detailed picture. The bigger size of wool they have, the more they can achieve a piece of nature-inspired art.
