Chapter 14

‘Have you ever seen a magician pull a coin out from behind someone’s ear?’ Granny asked.

Both children nodded.

‘Well, your great, great, great, great-grandfather could make gold coins appear from anywhere, without having to hide them up his sleeve first!’

Ruby thought of all the money that had poured out of Dad’s ears, nose and mouth this morning.

Granny took a sip of tea. ‘Funny Money was a trick he performed especially for any sceptics in the audience.’

‘What’s a sceptic?’ asked Todd.

‘A person who doesn’t believe in something,’ Granny explained. ‘The sceptics who attended his shows were mostly rich businessmen, who didn’t believe in magic. They did believe in money, however. Gold coins pouring out of their ears soon got their attention.’

Todd’s eyes gleamed. ‘Did Great, Great, Great, Great-Grandfather Wishfingers let them keep the money?’

‘Of course! Though as soon as they tried to spend it, it disappeared.’

‘But that’s unfair!’ Todd whined.

‘Ah.’ Granny smiled. ‘But if they gave the money away, it grew!’

Todd frowned. ‘What’s the point in that?’

Granny eyed Todd’s pockets, which were bulging with coins.

‘Perhaps it taught them a little lesson about greed. After all, the true power of money lies in its ability to help those who need it most—not those who want it most.’

Todd looked sheepish.

‘But Granny,’ Ruby said, puzzled, ‘there’s something I don’t understand. How can Dad have inherited magical powers from Great, Great, Great, Great-Grandfather Wishfingers? I mean, he doesn’t even believe in magic!’

‘If I didn’t believe in grey hair, would that make me any less of a grey-haired old lady?’

‘I suppose not,’ Ruby admitted.

Granny’s eyes twinkled behind her glasses. ‘If there’s magic within us that’s ready to come out, it finds a way, whether we believe in it or not!’
