Front-Loading and Revisiting Number Sense

An analysis of traditional mathematics texts would reveal that the content covered from chapter to chapter varies a great deal from one publisher’s text to the next. A similar characteristic of these texts is that number sense concepts are spread out across all chapters. As a preventative step, front-loading number sense content makes sense. As mentioned, number sense is the foundation of mathematics, much as phonological awareness is to reading (Gersten et al., 2005; Jordan, Kaplan, Olah, & Locuniak, 2006; Jordan, Kaplan, Ramineni, & Locuniak, 2009), and it is a key foundation to other subject content as well (Buffum et al., 2012). When number sense instruction occurs early in the school year, students at risk can receive supplemental supports sooner.
