MEDITERRANEAN GULL • Larus melanocephalus • 37 cm

Once an extreme rarity, now an increasingly common breeding species and widespread on passage and in winter, but finding a ‘Med Gull’ is still always a pleasure.

DESCRIPTION Slightly larger than Black-headed Gull, with slightly heavier, blunter bill. Bill and legs bright red in adults, blackish in younger immatures.

POPULATION First bred in Britain in 1968 and now over 600 pairs, mostly on S and E coasts. Despite its name, the majority of Mediterranean Gulls breed in the Black Sea. Once thought to be on the road to global extinction, its has increased and spread westwards across Europe in the last 50 years.
