Twelve

Chase woke early and rolled onto his side to watch Rose as she slept. She was peaceful with a glow radiating from her face. He was in love. He’d never been in love before and didn’t quite know what to do next. He didn’t want to move so quickly that he scared her, and yet he was ready to propose without even meeting Violet. She was a part of Rose, and even half of Rose was better than a whole of anything else. He knew he would love Violet just the way he loved her mother. Rose was beautiful and strong in ways that Chase had never known or suspected.

Checking the time on his phone, he climbed out of bed, careful not to wake her. He couldn’t help but admire her again from across the room before picking up his jeans, T-shirt, and blazer from the floor and hustling into the bathroom. It was five in the morning and the new day hadn’t begun to shine through her uncovered windows.

The switch made a loud click and light slowly filled the bathroom. He stood in front of the sink and looked at himself in the mirror and smiled. For the first time in as long as he could remember, Chase Tabeau was happy.

Pulling the small, round lens case from his coat pocket, he quickly popped in his contact and adjusted it inside his eye. Blinking hard, a tear of saline rolled down his cheek. A knock at the bathroom door startled him, and he quickly pulled his jeans on and zipped them halfway. “Yes?”

“It’s me,” Rose said, her voice muffled by the door.

Chase ran his hands through his hair, gave a heavy sigh and opened the door.

“I was afraid you were going to sneak out on me this morning,” she chimed with a cheerful smile as she smoothed down her terrycloth robe with her hands.

“That’s not my style, Doodlebug,” Chase said as he pulled her through the doorway by the waist and into his arms.

“Wow,” she whispered.

“What?”

“It’s just. I love your commanding presence. I’m kind of a control freak—in case you haven’t noticed—but I like being. . . you know—”

“No,” Chase said as he hugged her tight.

“I’ve been with men who want to control me. They’re pushy and manipulative and—”

“Hey,” Chase said as he dipped his knees to meet her head on. “I don’t want to control you.”

“I’m saying this all wrong,” Rose said as she stepped back and pushed a stray curl behind her ear. “You make me feel. . .safe.”

“Sweetheart,” Chase said as he kissed her on the head and pulled her into his chest. “I’ll always take care of you.”

She nodded into his body and took a deep breath but didn’t say a word. Chase watched her shoulders rise and fall and had never been more attracted to her. She was an honest and completely whole person. She’d been through some tough times, and he could tell she’d faced a lot on her own—just as he had.

Pulling away, he noticed the time on his watch.
