…she fell down a hole.

…giant hailstones began to fall.

…he changed his mood.

Students are less likely to use phrases independently if they have not had a chance to practise them first.

Number bonds to 100: The teacher calls out a number 0–100 and the students chant back the bond to hundred – (easily then extended to 1000 or any other number):

56 … 44!

87 … 13!

23 … 77!

This was an activity that students did frequently so the objective was to increase fluency through the speed of response. The more often they do it, the better they get.

Choral repetition: In a French lesson, students learn a new phrase and how to say it with a good accent by using it themselves repeatedly. The guided practice phase involves whole-class choral repetition with the teacher first modelling the French but then switching to give only the English.
