In this chapter, I have explained the relevance of the case that became the focus of my ethnographic research. I have set the selected school within the wider context of the town and related it to the causes as well as the results of the desegregation process. After the analysis of the ways ethnicity was (re)presented at the local educational level of the town, I focused on the institutional level of the school. Even though ethnicity did not become an explicit marker that would divide the institutional worlds in a similar way as gender does for girls and boys, it acted as a social characteristic endowed by symbolic power, and its results were discernible in the physical arrangement of the school. It seemed as if teachers were the bearers of some implicit set of presuppositions regarding the education of Roma students. They were perceived as potential disruptors of classroom order and consequently, they were usually located in the first and last rows of the classroom or they were not allowed to meet in the school corridors during breaks. The following two chapters will be devoted to the workings of the dynamics of ethnicity at the level of peer relationships, which turned out to be a very provocative research area. I show that ethnicity manifested more in a latent way, yet with perceptible social impact.
