Over the next two months, we returned to this room many times. We performed the usual obedience exercises: Sit, Stay, Down. There was a great deal of brushing and cuddling, from Mindy and friendly strangers. On a few occasions, strangers even had the nerve to brush my fur the wrong way. And fiddle with my ears. But Mindy’s look always told me these people didn’t know any better, so I forgave them and let it pass.

Do not ask me why, but many serious attempts were made to make me lose my cool. There were loud clanging noises. Heavy objects dropped on the floor. People rolling past me in wheelchairs or swinging along on sticks or making funny noises and faces. Did any of this bother me? Of course not! I had survived a Vicious Dog-Eating Car Door! This was nothing.
