Chapter Seven

“So tell me about this Gillian. From what you said, you saved her from getting burned. She’s tall and teaches aerobics. And lives next door? Related to Sophie?” Zack resumed his place on the turned-around chair, placing his mug on the table.

“Sophie died a couple of weeks ago. Gillian’s her heir. Maybe.”

Zack looked surprised. “I didn’t know. I can’t imagine home without Sophie next door.”

“She was in her nineties. Slowing down a bit, but still strong about some things. I miss her, and so does Jenny. Though I think Gillian’s making up for Sophie’s being gone.”

Zack finished his coffee. “I’m here for a few weeks. Let me know what I can do to help.”

“People from the church have been helping out,” Joe said. “And Gillian.”

Zack nodded. “Good. I remember the church rallying around whenever someone needed help. And how they helped us out when Mom and Dad died.”

“It’s a blessing to be part of God’s family,” Joe said. He wondered if Zack still attended church. He hadn’t gone the last time he’d visited.

Zack put his cup in the sink and headed for the back door. “I’ll get my things from the car.”

“Take the room at the back of the hall. The bed needs sheets.”

“Got it.”

The house had been their family home growing up. When their parents died, it went to Joe as the oldest son. But Joe hoped his brother knew he always had a home here.

The phone rang, and Joe picked it up without thinking, wincing at the pull on his burned palms.

“Kincaid,” he said.

“Joe, it’s Tate. We had one of your men look at the car. The brake line was tampered with. I’d say someone sabotaged the car. Puts the accident in a whole new light. If she’d been somewhere else with the brakes failing, well, I don’t need to tell you about what could have happened.”

Joe closed his eyes. Pamela’s brakes had worked and the car crash had still been devastating. There were curves that had no trees around them, some of which could lead straight to the sea. He gave a quick prayer of thanks to the Lord for watching over Gillian.

“So where do we go from here?” he asked the sheriff.

“I’m asking around town to see if anyone saw someone hanging around her car today. Don’t know exactly when it happened, but the puncture leaked brake fluid. Once we knew to look for it, we found traces in front of your shop, at the market parking lot and some dribble on the road before the accident scene. Do you know of anyone who would want to harm our new town resident?”

“I don’t. I asked her and she said she couldn’t think of anyone. Except maybe her father. But that doesn’t sound like something Robert Parker would do.”

“I’ll keep looking. I also plan to talk to the fire inspector again about that fire at her place. It’s starting to seem someone has targeted that young lady.”

“I hope not.” Joe made a silent vow to keep an eye on Gillian, to make sure nothing else happened to her.
