FAMILY DIPODIDAE—JERBOAS AND JUMPING MICE

Jumping mice are of wide distribution, occurring from central Europe and southern Scandinavia (birch mouse) to Mongolia and China. In North America, there are two genera, including four species, mostly of boreal distribution. Jumping mice were formerly segregated as a Holarctic family Zapodidae, but now are placed as a subfamily in the family Dipodidae, an otherwise Old World group that includes the bipedal jerboas.
