Fossil

Description: Crinoids are marine animals of the echinoderm group, which includes starfish and sea urchins. They consist of a segmented stem, branches, and leaflike arms. Crinoids frequently become fossilized in limestone and shale.

North American Locations: Mountains, plains, forests, river gravels, and lake and ocean shorelines across North America.

Collecting Tips: The best crinoid-collecting sites are exposures of weathered limestone and shale. Screens are helpful in recovering small fossils such as the disklike segments of crinoid stems.

Processing Tips: Crinoid fossils are fragile and should be cleaned only with water and a soft brush.
