Identity

According to Webster’s dictionary, identity is the state or quality of being identical, or the same; sameness.

The bible tells us in Genesis that we are made in the image of God.

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry long the ground. So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26-27

This tells me that we were created in the image of God to have his same likeness. Our identity is in God not others and not in things. Our value, our purpose, our identity comes from God. It does not come from social media, television, music etc. It comes from God. The things God says about us are good; they are true and can be trusted. It is easy to identify ourselves with things that are of no value. Things that may make people laugh or the newest trend are easy to conform to in this world.

We previously read that the Israelites identified themselves as grasshoppers because they were afraid of what they saw in the land. Have you ever thought why you and I were created in the image of God? Why His image? Why not ours? Or why not the worlds image?

I think this way sometimes. Maybe God knew that humans love to associate or identify themselves to something that would give them a sense of belonging. We all want to belong or feel a part of something so maybe this was God’s way of saying we can feel like we belong with Him.

Even if we don’t treat ourselves as one having value all the time we want value. God showed us our value was the cost of His Son because of His love for us. God showed us our value by creating us in His image to be like Him. For a long time I had to wake up and look in the mirror at my image and say, “Fatima, you have value,” in order to believe it. It was one of the turning points in my life because I often identified myself as inferior, lowly, devalued, a mess, and nothing of worth. Depression can make one feel that way. But God wants us to identify ourselves with Him. How do we do that? First, we need to know who God is.

Who is God? “God is the Supreme Being; the creator and ruler of all that is; the self-existent one who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom. God is one, but He exists as three persons-God the father, God the son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17). God is infinite (1 Timothy 1:17) incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22) and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). God exists everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12), knows everything (Psalm 147:5; Isaiah 40:28) and has all power and authority (Ephesians 1; Revelation 19:6).
