3. LOSING WEIGHT WITHOUT TRYING

Levels of obesity are rising across the world. In the 1980s 15 per cent of Americans were considered obese. By 2003 this had risen to around 34 per cent, with a staggering 17 per cent of American children and adolescents being classified as overweight. Carrying too much weight increases the likelihood of various health problems, especially heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer. It therefore isn’t surprising that millions of people make a concerted attempt to lose weight at some point in their lives. Ironically, the chances of them being successful are slim.

Many people are attracted to the quick and easy results promised by proponents of very low-calorie diets. Such diets are usually based around low-calorie, nutritionally complete, liquid meals. The short-term impact of such diets is impressive, with several research studies suggesting that around half of those using these products quickly lose around 80 per cent of their excess weight. However, when the researchers followed the dieters for the next few years a very different picture emerged. After about three years most of the participants had returned to their pre-diet weight, and after five years only three remained slim.21 This depressing pattern of results is not just limited to very low-calorie diets. After examining the results from hundreds of studies involving many different types of diet, one reviewer noted, ‘It is only the rate of weight regain, not the fact of weight regain, that appears open to debate.’22
