An hour later, hot and sweating I left the interview room. The questioning had been gruelling for Paris. Even when she cried, she received no sympathy from the policeman conducting the interrogation. Using bullying tactics, he gained the upper hand by making Paris use German.

The interviewer switched to English when she became confused and back to German when complacency surfaced. Before the interview I instructed Paris to tell the truth. Because of the German, I didn’t understand the main theme, apart from the meetings she’d attended with Justin.

Anna’s name came up several times. At the end, the policewoman who had been sitting close to Paris took her away for fingerprinting and photographing. The policeman told me Clyde had undergone the same treatment.

‘Did the German police conduct the interview fairly?’ asked Henry as we sat with coffee in the departure lounge.

‘Yes, they didn’t have a gentle approach, but I didn’t expect that. Although I became distressed during the worse part, I stayed quiet and have recovered. I can understand they need to find out what happened.’

‘The German Police are not expecting either of them to have any useful information, but with the seriousness of the situation, they will explore all angles.’ The departure lounge bustled with people and I surveyed the moving heads, desperate to glimpse Paris and Clyde.

I yearned to go back to the solitude of my isolated farmhouse and the friendly chatter of the villagers. I craved for the nightmare to end and I wanted to take my children home, ‘Will they release them?’

‘The authorities will release them into your custody.’ Henry remained calm and detached as he leaned back in his chair and watched my face. They expect to have completed their enquiries in time for you to catch the flight this evening. It is only a formality in case they want to speak to them again.’ My shoulders relaxed. By late this evening, we would be home.

‘They will compare notes while the fingerprinting and photographs are completed. There is a possibility they may have further questions if their comments do not tally.’ Hopefully poor Paris wouldn’t have to endure more stress, but I would have to wait to find out.

Half an hour later we were summoned back to the interview room. Heidi, the woman police officer, drew up a chair and sat next to me. Why was she sitting so close to me? I wasn’t going to run away. The Inspector entered and sat. The light manner of before had disappeared.

‘We no longer need to detain Clyde and he will be released into your custody in case we wish to interview him again, he may leave the country.’

‘What about Paris?’ A knot formed in my stomach.

The Inspector’s eyes narrowed. In perfect English, ‘She attended two meetings that are critical to our inquiry. It came as a surprise to realise her presence. She accompanied your husband, and several others, including Anna.’

‘What’s that mean?’ I gasped and stuttered while my whole body trembled. Sickness welled up in the pit of my stomach.
