Chapter 14

Resigned to spending the rest of the July Fourth holiday alone, Stephanie made herself a quick lunch and then gathered all her writing supplies and went outside to the deck. She was nearing a point in her story where the two main characters were falling for each other but they hadn’t been intimate yet. Art imitating life , she thought as she began to write.

Once she got started, the words seemed to flow out of her almost faster than she could type. It was like the story was being dictated to her and her job was simply to get it all down. When she had first set out to become a writer, she’d had no clue as to what it really entailed. Now, she’d discovered that she absolutely loved the creative process of weaving words into an engaging story. Well, at least it was engaging to her. She’d have to wait to find out what everyone else thought.

Her main characters, Chase and Alena, were beginning to take on a life of their own, and she was fascinated at the direction of her own story. What started out to be a mystery with a touch of romance was quickly becoming more romantic and less mysterious! But she trusted herself to tie it all together and hoped that she’d be happy with the result.

After writing for a few hours, she finally decided to take a break. She stood up and stretched and then walked inside to get a glass of water. As had become her habit, she peeked out the front window to see what was going on at Logan’s cabin, and sure enough, there was Lacey’s car in his driveway. He’d told Steph that his sister would probably try to monopolize the rest of his day, but he wasn’t planning on letting her hang around for long. He’d said he’d try to convince Lacey to go out with Justin, who had invited her to watch the fireworks that evening.

Stephanie went back outside and tried to write some more, but she discovered that her muse had closed down for the day. She brought her writing paraphernalia back inside and then stood in the middle of the room, wondering what she should do next. And then it struck her. She’d brought her sister Rachel’s DVDs of the Outlander series with her, which Rachel had been touting for a long time. “In case you get bored,” she’d said as she’d handed them to Steph.

Up until now, she hadn’t had time to be bored. Between the writing, the hiking, the kissing, and the daydreaming, she’d been well-occupied. But tonight, she was the only one she knew who didn’t have plans. When she saw Lacey and Logan get into Lacey’s car and drive away, that cinched it.

An hour later, Stephanie was perched on the edge of her seat in her pajamas with a bag of microwave popcorn between her legs. “Holy cow! No wonder Rachel wanted me to watch this,” she said to the empty room.
