CHAPTER TWENTY

MAYBE IT WASN’T Lori. It was an elaborate ruse to procure Christine’s cooperation. She hadn’t actually seen the woman’s face, and it was evident Tom and his cohorts knew how to use computers to get what they wanted.

Christine had only arrived at that conclusion after hours of vacillating between anger and prayer. She had nothing else to do in the cabin but stew in her own thoughts. Images of John’s body and Lori’s supposed abduction intermingled with speculation on the role Colonel Walter played in Tom’s plans.

It was too overwhelming.

As tears streamed down her face, Christine cried out to God in her heart. She blamed him at first, but then pleaded until she finally had nothing else to say. As she sat in silence, her mind filled with Scriptures proclaiming God’s sovereignty in the midst of bad situations. Over and over again, a voice reminded her, He means it for good.

The handle jiggled, then the door swung open and a man in a white jacket backed into the room. When he turned, Christine saw he was carrying a covered platter. “Good evening, ma’am,” the man said in a dry English accent. “Tonight’s course is slices of roast in a gravy, with a side of mashed potatoes and peas. I apologize for the simplicity of the meal, but I’m sure you understand the conditions are not ideal. If you don’t mind.” He used his elbow to gesture toward the wall.

Christine realized he wanted her to lower the shelf unit in the wall, something she’d already examined during her search of the room. She looked from the shelf back over to the open door. His hands full, she could be out of the room and looking for Lori before he could stop her.

“I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what will be waiting for you beyond the door,” he replied to the question hanging in the air. He motioned again at the wall.

With a sigh, Christine lowered the shelf for him to place the platter on it. He picked up the cover to reveal the
