CHAPTER TWENTY
MAYBE IT WASNâT Lori. It was an elaborate ruse to procure Christineâs cooperation. She hadnât actually seen the womanâs face, and it was evident Tom and his cohorts knew how to use computers to get what they wanted.
Christine had only arrived at that conclusion after hours of vacillating between anger and prayer. She had nothing else to do in the cabin but stew in her own thoughts. Images of Johnâs body and Loriâs supposed abduction intermingled with speculation on the role Colonel Walter played in Tomâs plans.
It was too overwhelming.
As tears streamed down her face, Christine cried out to God in her heart. She blamed him at first, but then pleaded until she finally had nothing else to say. As she sat in silence, her mind filled with Scriptures proclaiming Godâs sovereignty in the midst of bad situations. Over and over again, a voice reminded her, He means it for good.
Thinking back to her captivity in Jordan, Christine wondered how different the experience would have been had it occurred after giving her life over to Jesus Christ. Her spirit, though she had considered it strong, had been easily broken by the terrorist cell that had kidnapped her. Sheâd feared death then, but that was not what she feared now.
Let Tom do whatever he wanted. She thought only of Lori, if that was truly her in the video. Christine needed to stay close to Tom, help him with his scheme, only to have a chance at finding out the truth.

Confused, Christine stood and said, âCome in,â though her voice finished high, making it sound less like an invitation and more like a question.
The handle jiggled, then the door swung open and a man in a white jacket backed into the room. When he turned, Christine saw he was carrying a covered platter. âGood evening, maâam,â the man said in a dry English accent. âTonightâs course is slices of roast in a gravy, with a side of mashed potatoes and peas. I apologize for the simplicity of the meal, but Iâm sure you understand the conditions are not ideal. If you donât mind.â He used his elbow to gesture toward the wall.
Christine realized he wanted her to lower the shelf unit in the wall, something sheâd already examined during her search of the room. She looked from the shelf back over to the open door. His hands full, she could be out of the room and looking for Lori before he could stop her.
âIâm sure I donât have to tell you what will be waiting for you beyond the door,â he replied to the question hanging in the air. He motioned again at the wall.
With a sigh, Christine lowered the shelf for him to place the platter on it. He picked up the cover to reveal the
