would be considered unnecessarily cumbersome and nonintuitive, with the student being sent to a learning specialist to be taught how to do it “right.”

Geometry

Geometry should be an area in which right-brained students excel because it involves spatial relationships, demanding a kind of reasoning that’s congruent with visual and spatial ability. However, many left-brained teachers even manage to turn geometry into an exercise in logic and sequentiality, endlessly drilling students on formulas, theorems, and proofs. This emphasis on deductive reasoning tends to interfere with the right-brained student’s intuitive logic, and even if he arrives at the correct answer, he may be docked for missing or not showing all the steps that got him there.

Some teachers argue that if you cannot show your steps, you’ll be unable to move on to higher levels of mathematics, such as trigonometry and calculus. What they mean to say is it would be impossible for them to proceed to a higher level. This is certainly not the case for the numerous gifted, spatial, right-brained students with whom I’ve worked, who have absolutely no difficulty with higher math concepts but struggle mightily with anything that requires sequential processing.

The following example serves to illustrate the difference between the more traditional (left-brained) and right-brained approach to geometry:

Your child is given a homework assignment to determine the degree of each angle when two parallel lines are intersected by two transversals. His task is to find the degree of each angle, A through P, with only one clue: that angle D = 120 degrees.
