Had you met him before that?

No [laughs].

We had a jazz group together. It was his groups called Banjo Jazz. We’d experiment with some sounds and everything. We went to Washington, DC, and did a show up there and in Baltimore at Ethel Ennis’s jazz club. It was me, Béla, Tom Roady was playing percussion, Kirby Shelstad on vibraphone, and Mark Schatz on bass. We had a blast. That was just before the Wootens and the others.

You were on the cutting edge of the new grass sound.

Yeah, and, like were we talking about, that was before isolation. They used to set new grass up in a circle at Lee Hazen’s Studio by the Pond. We shared overhead microphones. I just used one drum or whatever. They’d record the whole thing. That’s how it was then.
