Turning the soil
A combination of digging out the worst weeds and simply turning the rest of the plot over can be effective. By turning the soil you will expose the worst of the roots, allowing them to dry out. If you have heavy soil, it will expose it to the elements, which help it to break down, and you will be able to come along at a later date and pick out many of the roots with the soil in a far more workable condition. Turning the soil just once is not enough, though: to clear the ground you will have to do it repeatedly, digging out all the roots of weeds as you go. For the best results, choose a spring day when there is sun and wind, which will cause the dug roots to dry out rapidly.
