PREP Use a soft paintbrush to remove any dust on the plant. If you dress the surface of the soil with grit, inspect it for cleanliness and, if need be, remove it and sprinkle fresh grit. Take care transporting plants with delicate stems and flowers, and wear thick gardening gloves when handling specimens with sharp spines.

PRESENT Make sure the pot is clean and in proportion to the size of the plant. If the specimen you are showing has a best side, stage it so that this side is facing forwards on the bench.

JUDGING NOTES While the condition, maturity, and rarity of the plant are important, judges prefer plants in flower or showing evidence that they have flowered. A species, hybrid, or cultivar that is difficult to cultivate is preferred to one that is not. The judging criteria given here are applicable to smaller shows. For specialist shows, British Cactus and Succulent Society rules may apply (see www.bcss.org.uk for more details).
