Chapter 30

Galen

Galen couldn’t believe he was nervous about morning devotions, but he was. He’d already been up for an hour, had already done his prayer-walk, and was now sitting on his couch with his Bible, trying to figure out how to do a morning devotion with his wife. He felt entirely unprepared. He didn’t want to preach at her. Exactly how did couples do devotions? He knew this was a thing. Maybe he should’ve asked Kevin. He thought about texting him, but was too embarrassed.

He looked up as he heard Maggie coming down the stairs. Her hair was wet from the shower and she was already dressed. This surprised him. Usually she had her coffee before she got ready for the day. “I made you coffee again,” he said, sounding too much like a bad pupil trying to kiss up to the teacher.

“Thank you,” she said graciously. “I’ll be right back.” She glided into the kitchen and got herself some coffee and then returned to set it on the coffee table. “Hang on, I forgot my Bible.”

He watched her walk up the stairs, and silently thanked God for her. He hadn’t been appreciating her enough lately. He hadn’t had the time or energy. Or rather, he hadn’t made the time and reserved the energy.

She came back down the stairs and sat beside him, seeming a bit tentative.

“So, I’ll be honest,” he started. “I don’t really know how this is going to go. I’ve led a lot of devotions over the years, but usually, I just read a Scripture and then talk about it. But I don’t want to preach to you.” He chuckled and leaned back into the sofa. “Do you want to preach to me?”

She seemed to be considering it. “I don’t think so.”

“Okay, so how do you want this to go?”

She let out a long breath.

“I’m sorry. You were probably expecting me to be better prepared.”

“No, no, that’s not it. But I don’t know how it’s supposed to go either. Maybe we could just read some verses and then pray? And if we do this every day, certainly it will get less awkward.” She smiled at him. “We’ll get better at it.”

“Yeah, yeah, that’s a great idea. Okay, so what Scripture?” He opened his Bible.

She shrugged. “I like to do the open flop method?”

He looked up at her. “Huh?”

“I’ll show you.” She held her Bible out in front of her with both hands. “Father, show me what you want me to see.” She gave the slender book a small shake and then relaxed her hands, and it wobbled a bit before falling open. She looked down.

“Okay, where are we at?”

She looked up at him, a bit of chagrin in her eyes. “It doesn’t always work. We’re in Ecclesiastes.” She started to close the Bible, but he stuck his hand out over hers and kept it open.

He laughed, a genuine laugh that felt foreign to his chest, but relaxed him from head to toe. “That’s okay. What does Ecclesiastes have to say to us this morning?”

She read, “There is an appointed time for everything.
