Chapter Seventeen
Kitty wasnât in the shop the next morning, another one of mine, so I unlocked the door and flipped the sign myself. I set my coffee cup on the counter, shrugging off my spring cashmere poncho that had been my last birthday present from home. The door jingled â not the customer I was meeting, but Nathan.
âHey, Juli,â he said. âIâm on my way home â everything okay last night? No hidden contractions or fatigue that didnât get reported to me? You can tell when sheâs lying, probably better than I can.â He grinned.
I couldnât help studying him â he looked innocent. No lie in those calm eyes, right? Just the regular look of amiable happiness as he tucked his hands in the pockets of his dark business jacket. If there was a breeze of perfume wafting from his clothes, it didnât reach me over here, only the smell of the interior air freshener and disinfectant that Nathan used in his car.
âShe sounded like herself when I rang at six,â I said. âSlept like a baby all night long, which means she probably woke five times to pee, and had an insatiable craving for cinnamon buns.â
Nathan laughed. âI shouldâve bought some at a bakery,â he said, sounding regretful. He looked a little bit tired today, and a little bit ... distracted? Or am I reading too much into this? I asked myself. That faraway look in his eyes might be for the paperwork he still had to finish at his office.
âThereâs always tea buns from Charlotteâs shop,â I suggested.
âGood idea,â he said. âBabyâs almost here, right? Canât be health food every single second. She deserves something special. People will start thinking Iâm neglecting her, the way I work.â
âRight,â I said, although this was a reverse position for him that surprised me. âAre you home for the day? Kittyâs been baking, fair warning, so thereâs stuff to keep you busy for hours.â
âMmm, I would love to, but I have to get back to the grind,â he said. âIâm stopping in to shower, change, and give Kitty a kiss.â He checked a message on his phone as it pinged, studying it with a pensive expression that put worry lines in his forehead. He smiled at the end, and put it back in his pocket.
âIf you donât mind checking in on Kitty for me a couple of times today and tomorrow?â he asked. âIâm swamped, I would really appreciate the help this week.â He took a pen from his pocket and scribbled a note on the pad on our counter. âThatâs the number and address of our G.P. if you need it, in case something happens, and you know you can call me any time. Leave a message if my phoneâs off.â
âSure.â I felt my heart sink a little. âIâll be happy to help.â
âThanks a mil, Juli. Iâll make it up to you after things arenât so crazy, promise.â He exited. The bellâs happy little jingle clashed overhead.
I felt like brooding now.
