Krefeld, June 1943

Is it the intense heat that has caused our eyes to get bad again? Whatever the reason, at breakfast yesterday morning most of us were wearing dark glasses. The sunlight flooding the refectory was simply unbearable. Then La Concon swept into the room in a fury, declaring that the sight of all these women in dark glasses was depressing. On the strength of which she confiscated our glasses; we're not convinced this made us any less depressing.

Certain notions of elementary hygiene are clearly in need of updating. Scabies is supposed to be contagious, for instance. An old wives' tale! Marguerite, the young apprentice to whom I am now teaching our job, has scabies. Her arms are covered with more or less oozing sores, which she scratches assiduously. For eight hours every day and twelve hours on Sundays we plunge our hands and arms into the same bucket of water. But I haven't caught scabies yet.
