CHAPTER 13

Leah

Acrowd of photographers stood outside on the sidewalk like a swarm of bees targeting a new hive. They were a good ten feet away, but their long telescopic lenses were aimed directly at their faces. Leah quickly pulled Ella back from the window as Jace flipped the blinds closed.

“Why are they taking pictures of our house, Mama?” Ella asked in wonder. “Are they here to see Mr. Jace?”

“They must be. It’s part of the life of being a rock star.” Leah shot a wary look Jace’s way, but he was too busy answering a phone call to comment. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to stay calm for Ella’s sake. “Come on, Ella, lunch is almost ready. Please go wash your hands.”

“But I wanna see the photographers.”

“They’ll probably still be there when we’re done eating,” she replied drolly as she directed Ella down the hall to the bathroom. “Go on now. Mr. Jace made chicken nuggets just for you. You don’t want to miss out on them.”

“My favorite!” she exclaimed. “I’ll be right there!”

Leah rubbed her temples and prayed for peace. Lord, this is too crazy. What do I do?

The media circus outside her home was unlike anything she’d ever seen, in person at least. She knew celebrities experienced this kind of attention on a regular basis, but she was a nobody. They had to be here because of Jace, but what did this mean for her and Ella? This was exactly the kind of scrutiny she didn’t want her daughter to be exposed to, and here it was outside their front door.

Everything about this day had her emotions in a jumble. From having Jace call her beautiful, to cooking with him and hearing about his struggles, to learning that she had played a part in his recovery—it was all too much. Especially when he had placed his hand over hers. His touch alone made her want to throw all her cares aside and invite him back into her life.

She needed to stay strong. Getting involved with a rock star was not something a single mom with an ill child did. She would get along with Jace for their daughter’s sake, but that was all their relationship would be. Friendly, cooperative, and respectful. Not emotional, passionate, or romantic.

Feeling determined, Leah turned around to head to the kitchen. She’d only taken a step when she plowed straight into a firm chest. Muscular arms surrounded her, pulling her into a warm embrace. When she thought she’d found her footing, Jace’s familiar scent had her off-kilter again. A flush rose in her cheeks as a flood of memories came to mind. Dancing in Jace’s backyard as he’d held her just like this. Him dipping her backwards just enough so he could nuzzle her neck. Then the two of them kissing and kissing until all her inhibitions faded away.

Even as her body longed to relax into Jace’s arms, she shook herself free. “Sorry about that. I didn’t see you.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Jace answered, his voice low and emotional.
