When I woke up the next morning, the last thing I expected to find was Mack lying beside me. Even before I’d nodded off last night, I’d known that once I had, he’d sneak away. That was why I’d made him tell me that story. It was for no other reason than to keep him here as long as possible.

Yet the only large mass that could be next to me was him.

Sure enough. As soon as I opened my eyes, I was met with a peaceful-looking Mack sleeping beside me.

This thrill ran through me at the idea that he’d chosen to sleep in this crowded little bunk with me. I had no idea when he’d made that choice or when he’d climbed back into bed with me because I’d slept harder last night than I usually did.

Scratch that. I’d been sleeping harder at night lately than I used to. Just a byproduct of being sick, I suppose.

With him there, I didn’t want to get up. If I had it my way, we’d lie there all day just so I could look at him.

“Stop staring at me,” he said with a gravelly voice that was as sexy as I remembered.

I’d heard Mack first thing in the morning many times, though never from right beside me before he’d even opened his eyes.

“I didn’t know you’re awake.”

Without even cracking those eyes open, he rolled over on top of me and pushed his lips into mine. My legs spread to allow him the space, as if that was all they had ever been meant to do. I should’ve been embarrassed by how readily I accepted his tongue into my mouth, yet I couldn’t be bothered.

I’d wanted Mack for so long that I’d take just about anything he had to offer.

In all of these months dealing with this kidney issue, I’d never once hoped that I’d feel as alive as I did when his attention was on me. Especially this kind of attention.

As soon as I noticed his hardness pushing into my core, he pulled away, causing me to groan in protest.

“I have to start getting ready,” he said quietly.

“So early?”

He nodded. “We’re in Portland and the band has a radio interview we have to get to. Have to get ready.”

My guess was that it wasn’t actually early, but I’d taken a while to fall asleep last night and he’d still been awake then. Rock tours keep weird hours.

“You should get up and come with us.” Now that surprised me. Yes, he’d kissed me last night and then again this morning, but it hadn’t occurred to me that he’d want me around with everyone else.

“I’m going to have to tell Daisy,” I told him.

His brows furrowed. “That you’re coming with us? I don’t think she’ll care.”

“Of course she won’t care. That’s not what I’m talking about.”

I waited as long as it took for realization to set in.

He rubbed the back of his head uncomfortably. “Uh…”

“Look.” I sat up, which was a lot easier to do than you’d think.
