When I woke up the next morning, the last thing I expected to find was Mack lying beside me. Even before Iâd nodded off last night, Iâd known that once I had, heâd sneak away. That was why Iâd made him tell me that story. It was for no other reason than to keep him here as long as possible.
Yet the only large mass that could be next to me was him.
Sure enough. As soon as I opened my eyes, I was met with a peaceful-looking Mack sleeping beside me.
This thrill ran through me at the idea that heâd chosen to sleep in this crowded little bunk with me. I had no idea when heâd made that choice or when heâd climbed back into bed with me because Iâd slept harder last night than I usually did.
Scratch that. Iâd been sleeping harder at night lately than I used to. Just a byproduct of being sick, I suppose.
With him there, I didnât want to get up. If I had it my way, weâd lie there all day just so I could look at him.
âStop staring at me,â he said with a gravelly voice that was as sexy as I remembered.
Iâd heard Mack first thing in the morning many times, though never from right beside me before heâd even opened his eyes.
âI didnât know youâre awake.â
Without even cracking those eyes open, he rolled over on top of me and pushed his lips into mine. My legs spread to allow him the space, as if that was all they had ever been meant to do. I shouldâve been embarrassed by how readily I accepted his tongue into my mouth, yet I couldnât be bothered.
Iâd wanted Mack for so long that Iâd take just about anything he had to offer.
In all of these months dealing with this kidney issue, Iâd never once hoped that Iâd feel as alive as I did when his attention was on me. Especially this kind of attention.
As soon as I noticed his hardness pushing into my core, he pulled away, causing me to groan in protest.
âI have to start getting ready,â he said quietly.
âSo early?â
He nodded. âWeâre in Portland and the band has a radio interview we have to get to. Have to get ready.â
My guess was that it wasnât actually early, but Iâd taken a while to fall asleep last night and heâd still been awake then. Rock tours keep weird hours.
âYou should get up and come with us.â Now that surprised me. Yes, heâd kissed me last night and then again this morning, but it hadnât occurred to me that heâd want me around with everyone else.
âIâm going to have to tell Daisy,â I told him.
His brows furrowed. âThat youâre coming with us? I donât think sheâll care.â
âOf course she wonât care. Thatâs not what Iâm talking about.â
I waited as long as it took for realization to set in.
He rubbed the back of his head uncomfortably. âUhâ¦â
âLook.â I sat up, which was a lot easier to do than youâd think.
