“How are you feeling?” Angie whispered to Megan as they took their seats in front of the small audience.

“Barely any jitters,” Megan said with a shrug. “The maestro’s circle is basically our fan club. They’ll love everything we play for them.”

“I wasn’t asking about that.” Her older sister sighed, then stared pointedly at her stomach.

“Ohhh.” Megan laughed softly and caught herself before she placed her hand on her baby bump. “We’re doing swell.”

“Good.” Angie’s affectionate smile made Megan blink. She looked so much like their mom. “Glad to hear Nephew and Sister are both doing swell.”

“Thank you, Unni.” Megan turned to include Chloe. “All right, ladies. Are we ready?”

At her sisters’ nods, she brought the violin under her chin and raised the bow. They all inhaled together, held their breath for a second, then Megan dropped her bow to the strings. She and her sisters exhaled as the music carried them away.

Schubert’s String Trio D 471 was both playful and deeply moving—simply beautiful in its complexity. The Hana Trio weaved through the depths and peaks of the piece with courage and vulnerability, the three of them supporting each other and lifting each other up. The trust between Megan and her sisters brought an added layer to the piece that was entirely their own.

As the last note and its vibrations faded, they lowered their bows. There was a moment of awed silence before applause erupted from the audience. Megan smiled at her sisters and the three of them stood and took their bow. The applause didn’t die down until another group of their fellow musicians filed onto the stage.

The mezzanine of the concert hall was bustling with the most generous and well-dressed of the Chamber Music Society’s donors when the performers joined the party. The royal blue-and-gold carpeting, dark wood trimming and crystal chandeliers gave the event the opulence and elegance befitting their guests of honor, the maestro’s circle.

Daniel, while not a member of the maestro’s circle yet, scored himself an invite, thanks to Angie. The Chamber Music Society owed Angie and Joshua for their part in revitalizing their organization when it was in dire straits after the pandemic. But even as she craned her neck this way and that, Megan couldn’t find the damn man—which only meant one thing. He wasn’t there. There was no way she could miss him, even in a crowd.

Then she saw him walking up the staircase with his tie slightly askew. His head swiveled left and right, and he raked his fingers through his hair, obviously not for the first time tonight. Megan was peeved he was late, but decided to give him a break and wove through the crowd toward him.

The frown on his face cleared when his eyes landed on her. “Megan.”

“This is the second time you missed our performance,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m beginning to think that you would do anything to get out of listening to classical music.”

“I’m sorry,” he murmured. When she continued to glare at him, he moved closer and whispered, “I’m sorry, baby.
