Chapter Five

It stank.

That was Devon’s first impression the second the guards shoved them into the cramped cell. Tomos joined them just as the iron-barred door swung shut. Arms crossed, he studied them with an amused smirk.

“I must say,” Tomos muttered, his gaze more on his brother than on Devon. “I’d expected far more from you, Calon.”

Vincent said nothing, only sat on a stone ledge, his legs stretched out before him, back against the grimy wall. Devon wanted to grab the man’s shoulders and shake him to within an inch of his damned life.

“As it is, I have much to do.” Tomos lifted a hand and the massive lock on the door glowed yellow briefly before the light faded. Devon had a distinct feeling they wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while. Tomos gave Vincent one last, measured look, then turned, all but two guards following him out of the dungeon.

“What in God’s name are you thinking?” Devon hissed, whirling around to face his silent lover. “Are you planning on letting us rot in here?”

Vincent finally met Devon’s gaze and Devon stumbled backward. Gone were the blue-gray irises of a human—in their place, golden eyes glowing with a touch of madness. Devon slid down the opposite wall to the floor, barely feeling the cold, damp stone. Vincent still said nothing.

“What is going through your head?” Devon whispered, more to himself than anyone else. “Where are you?”

Vincent had warned him about the dangers of addiction when it came to magic. Devon had heard, but he hadn’t listened. Now here he sat, face to face with a being that held more power than Devon could even begin to understand, and Vincent looked almost as crazed as his tyrannical brother.
