"I very much doubt that's how it works. There's no way that the Queens have no responsibilities for three quarters of the year," she countered.

"More like all of the year but two days. And some of them only one. Do you do anything to pass the weather on to Spring?" he asked.

She frowned. Did she? There was always a weird tug deep within her whenever the season changed, but maybe that was just because she had more of an affinity for the cold and not because the seasons were actually changing. It could be something more, though she suspected she'd never actually know unless she accepted the position as Queen and could ask what it actually entailed. Which was a shame.

"I still think there's more to it than the occasional season change," she insisted. "And I'm not going to stop saying that," she added.

"Okay, I'll admit it. You're right, there is more to it than that. Though I couldn't tell you more how. It's one of those things I was kept out of because I was male."

Eira frowned. It was easy for her to forget how men were treated in the fae realm, especially when she only visited for formal occasions. Would that continue if she ascended the throne with her men by her side? She shook her head, not wanting to consider it. The point was completely moot until she had Rueben back with them.

"Are you sure it's going to be okay if we go?" Josh asked her.

"Yes. Please do." She wasn't a hundred percent sure that's what she wanted, but there really wasn't another choice.

Both of them kissed goodbye, neither lingering. Probably because they were just as aware that they needed to get this sorted as fast as possible.

What none of them had brought up yet, was the fact that if Rueben died, the rest of them would too.

At least that would solve the problem of whether or not to become a Queen or not. If she was dead, the answer would be obvious.

Ten

The world was different. Though she couldn't quite understand how, or why. Wind whistled around her, both cold and hot at the same time.

Eira stepped forward, gravel crunching under her feet. She was fairly certain she was just down the road from their flat, outside the supermarket they did most of their shopping in. And yet, it wasn't at the same time. The windows of the shop were gone, leaving jagged edges of shattered glass. But it wasn't a recent thing if the amount of dust around was anything to go by. Nor from the ransacked shelves.

"Hello?" she called out, already feeling like that might be the wrong idea. She couldn't see any other people, which was odd, to say the least. Normally the place was teaming with them, going about their days, minding their own business. It was part of living in the centre of a city.

Which made the quiet particularly eerie.

"Hello?" she called again, hugging her arms around her.

Where were her mates? None of them were close, but she couldn't tell where they'd gone.
