Sometimes a filmmaker’s access to primary sources diminishes rather than heightens the authenticity of a biographical film. A good example of too much access leading to excess is Chaplin, director Richard Attenborough’s film portrait of the greatest actor of the silent era.

In telling the story of Charlie Chaplin, Attenborough and a quartet of credited screenwriters relied on the subject’s autobiography, plus sources the late star may have not been happy to supply, but his widow, Oona O’Neill Chaplin, happily turned over to the director. “I met her about 20 times,” Attenborough said of the woman Chaplin married when she was an underage teen, his favorite type of love interest. “It was not an intimate relationship, but she was sweet enough to say I could see everything: letters, diaries, and ask questions, even if they seemed somewhat indelicate.”
