To say things were awkward between Azrael and I would be putting it lightly. As much as I tried to forget our kiss belowground in his cave room, I couldn’t put it out of my head. Nor could I forget the things he said to me. The fact that I fucking beat his ass in our little bet helped take some of the edge off, though.

Turned out a well-seasoned chunk of beef was all it took to motivate me. He made note of that for our next training session and has promised me that if I can withstand him trying to batter down my defenses for three minutes that I will get an entire box of cupcakes from Crème de la Cake in San Francisco, my all-time favorite cake shop.

“Why can’t we go now?” I whined as we settled into our seats on the private plane. “I’m hungry and you promised.”

I opened my legs to Azrael, making a show of the fact that I was armed and dangerous, my stakes glinting in the low lighting on the aircraft.

He rolled his eyes. “We have work to do.”

“But you said—”

“I’ve added a stop in Baltimore to the flight plan for the return trip just to get you a burger, I’d say that I’ve made good on my bargain.” He tossed me a few packs of pretzels and peanuts. “Here,” he said coyly. “Have some nuts.”

I snickered at him but tore open the top of the plastic film and dumped some pretzels into my mouth. “They’re stale,” I said around a mouthful of yuck.

Azrael shrugged. “I don’t usually have mortal company aboard my plane.”

Speaking of the plane, it was somehow smaller than I thought it would be. Not a full-size aircraft as I’d pictured since the last time, I was on it I was unconscious for the entirety of the trip. There were two banks of four seats. Each bank of four split into two against opposing walls facing each other. I was sitting across from Blake, who was staring out into the night with a crease between his brows.

“Hey,” I said, kicking out to get his attention with a nudge to his seat. “What’s up? You okay?”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah,” he said and then shook his head, sending the longer strands of his dark hair brushing over his brow. “Fine. Just don’t like flying.”

I got the feeling that wasn’t all but didn’t want to press him. When Blake got all broody like he was now it was generally best to leave him alone.

Frost was sitting in the bank of four seats behind me, so the back of his chair was against the back of mine. I spun to see that he was alright as the plane began to drive along the curving path of the road in the field, leading us toward the runway.

Before I could ask him if he was good, I watched his fist clench against the plush leather seat and he asked, “Where were you this morning?” his voice gruff and gravelly.
