Ari scowled, wiping the oily waste of demon's blood from his eyes, but no matter how long he squinted, he couldn't square the current scene with any version of normal that he knew. In the past ten minutes, every manner of imaginable shit had erupted all over them.

The battle had started with pip-squeak-sized demons who'd squeezed through the wards, oozing venom and foulness. As soon as they'd decimated those fleas, a troop of leather-winged creeps had come marching down the front drive. Then a little crackpot minion had swiped in next, actually having the gall to land on Leonidas's shoulder. As if any shithead should try that with the king of all Spartans and immortals.

Yet all of that had been a fucking dress rehearsal compared to the unholy and heinous Djinn who'd just galloped into their midst. Ari cursed under his breath. Sable. On the Angels' property somehow, rearing up with those famous jeweled swords of his and thrashing his forelegs at the air that separated him from the group of them.

"I've come with a message." Sable dropped his forelegs back to the ground while still brandishing his swords.

Jamie fired on him right then, but of course ammunition didn't do jack against the demon. With his extremely fast reflexes, Sable raised his shield and deflected the incoming rounds. As good as Jamie was, his demon-fighting powers were pretty much useless in the face of a demon as strong as Sable.

"You want a piece of me, then?" Ari stepped forward with a growl, ready to take on the Djinn, demon to immortal.

Leonidas caught his arm. "Wait," the king said coolly. "See what he says."

Sable laughed dully, his scarred, ruined face twisting into a cruel mask. "Smart, king. No wonder they made a few movies about you& even if you did lose at the Hot Gates."

Ari growled louder, straining to hold himself back from the bastard who had once destroyed his brother Ajax's life. And who had nearly ended River's life for good.

Sable noticed, his eyes flaring a blazing shade of red. "But I'd keep your boy there on a leash, Leonidas. He seems to have spent too much time with his friend& that"his mouth twisted in distaste"butter knife. Or is it a fork?"

"You know exactly how powerful River is freak show," Ari shot back, taking a step forward, but this time Kalias grabbed him by the back of the neck like he was a kitten, for crap's sake.

"Pipe down, Ari," his ever-cool big brother cautioned, hand still clamped along his nape.

"We wish to hear your message," Leonidas called to Sable, shield firmly in place, their whole line intact.

The demon turned in a circle, apparently thinking he cut a majestic and threatening figure. He was tall; Ari would give the ugly centaur that.

"Ares makes a demand," he announced. "Of that weapon-shifting slave. You're to surrender him two nights hence, at sunset."

"For what purpose?" Leonidas replied.

"Ares needs no purpose!" Sable roared. "You swore an oath to him, and this is a duty he requires of you.
