2. Pietist scholar Peter James Yoder is surely right that any account of historical, classical Pietism must treat Spener and Francke as the movement’s main, defining prototypes. Spener, he cogently argues, was the “very soul of the movement” at its beginning (with Arndt as a major influence on him). Francke became the movement’s “principal representative” after Spener. According to Yoder, depending on philosopher George Lakoff, “prototypes merely speak of a cognitive centrality and allow for fluid, fuzzy boundaries.” See “ ‘Rendered Odious’ as Pietists: Anton Wilhelm Böhme’s Conception of Pietism and the Possibilities of Prototype Theory,” in The Pietist Impulse in Christianity, ed. Christian T. Collins Winn et al. (Eugene, Ore.: Pickwick Press, 2011), pp. 17-26.
