Scrap, Waste, and Oddities
Reclaimed millwork generates significant amounts of rejected wood—its waste factor, aside from sawdust: so-called “aged skins,” naily edges, or crosscut ends. The daily tempest of scrap typically gets turned into mulch or fuel or waste. But this heavily distressed mix can also be freed up and reclaimed. The panels in this series represent a range of small lots. Boardwalk edges, whale-oiled timber, naily barnwood, curly grain Douglas fir: each escaped the scrap pile, with striking results. Reclaimed cypress lumber that contains holes left by a fungus that destroys the heart of the tree, called pecky cypress (this page), while not to everyone’s taste, commands a premium.
