But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” . . .

The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body . . .

I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

6. What does Paul tell us in this passage about the bodies we will have when we are raised from the dead?

[Your Response]

7. When Paul speaks of a “spiritual” body, he doesn’t mean a ghostly, insubstantial body. He means a body animated by the Holy Spirit, not just by biological mechanisms. Our bodies will be more than natural (supernatural), not less than natural. What might be some things that spiritual bodies can do that natural bodies can’t?

[Your Response]

8. Why do you think Paul so strongly emphasizes the defeat of death? How does Christ’s defeat of death release Christians from the burden of death that the world lives with?

[Your Response]

9. How do you think the hope of resurrection should affect believers' attitudes toward death in the here and now?

[Your Response]

10. How should our hope of resurrection affect our attitude toward aging and physical disability?

[Your Response]

11. Read the passage aloud again. Take two minutes of silence to reread the passage, looking for a sentence, phrase, or even one word that stands out as something Jesus wants you to hear. Ask Him to help you hear Him. If you’re meeting with a group, the leader will keep track of time. At the end of two minutes, you may share your word or phrase with the group if you wish.

[Your Response]

12. Read the passage aloud again. Take two minutes of silence, asking Jesus what He is saying to you through the word or phrase you selected and whether He would like you to do anything in response. If you’re meeting with a group, the leader will again keep track of time. At the end of two minutes, you may share with the group what came to you in the silence if you wish.

[Your Response]

13. If you’re meeting with a group, how can the members pray for you? If you’re using this study on your own, what would you like to say to God right now?
