I was ten days shy of my ninety-day probation with Tyler and Meredith. Progress had slowed after the party. Things just weren't gelling. I needed to turn the business around before the sharks swarmed, or worse, a competing app made us obsolete.

Tyler seemed distracted, and after the initial flood of users following our tabloid exploits, the rate for onboarding new people just wasn't up to snuff.

Meredith had been working hard, but there were no real results. Maybe she'd been distracted by that Peter guy she'd met at the party. I did not know what she saw in that man. He had to be forty-five years old and a total wet blanket. But they'd been seeing each other quite a bit since the party.

I went down to the kitchen. Dad was there.

"They delivered your cars," he said. "Nice Spyder."

"You can't borrow it."

"What about the Jag?" he asked.

"Fine," I said, deciding to give him a break.

"Sweet," he said. He dug into the freezer and pulled out a Tupperware container.

"What's that?" I asked.

He pulled the blender out from under the sink. "I saw a YouTube video on how to make your own sorbet. Thought I'd give it a whirl."

"How do you do it?"

"Some people say add condensed milk to frozen fruit. Other people say you could do it with sugar and gelatin, or just frozen fruit and honey."

"What did you do?"

"Agave nectar, some sugar, and gelatin. Plus, I threw in a banana, but I think that might've been a mistake."

I looked at the dark brown spots in his yellowish sorbet. "Dad, what did you put in with the banana?"

"Lemon," he said. "The banana seems to have made the color a little less appetizing."

I laughed.

The sounds of Dad blending away echoed through the kitchen.

My phone rang. "Tell me how it turns out."

"Only if it turns out good," he said.

I walked out of the kitchen so the noise wouldn't interfere with my call. It was Preston. "Hey, how's it going?"

"Pretty good, but I think I may have some gossip that will interest you. But it's not good."

I hated when Preston beat around the bush. "Just say it."

"You remember my cousin, right?"

"The one that graduated from my school a couple years after me."

"Yes, her childcare thing has her going all over the place. So she was at the Brentwood Country Club, and she saw Jamison talking to Damien Bronson."

Fuck, my ex-partner was talking to one of Tyler's cousins! "Do they even know each other?

"I think they were in the same fraternity, just different chapters," he said.

"Do you think he's trying to leverage that relationship into a meeting with Tyler to steal eMingle?"

"All I know is that he was there, and he was talking to Damien and that I thought you should know. The rest you need to figure out."

"Yeah," I said, my mind immediately running through a ton of possibilities. Would his cousin tempt Tyler to take the meeting? No, he couldn't.

Tyler and Meredith always seemed intimidated by their cousins. I never understood it.

I hope that didn't mean that Damien Bronson had sway over Tyler.
