CHAPTER ELEVEN:
THERE IS NO OFFSEASON
âEvery day you come to work, five things will happen you didnât anticipate.â
âBILL PARCELLS
I was playing golf with Coach Smith and Coach Guthridge at Governors Club in Chapel Hill. We had finished a season that had some great momentsâan eighteen-game winning streak, beating Duke at Duke, winning the ACC Regular Season Title, being named AP National Coach of the Year, and recruiting had gone well. I was trying to enjoy some time away from the stress of the season and recruiting. It had been a taxing year. I really enjoyed being with those men. It was an honor to spend time with them. When the round was over, I pulled my cell phone out of my golf bag and, as usual, there were a lot of voice mails! I listened to a message about Joe Forte possibly going pro! Joe was a sophomore All-American. He had a terrific year and was our best returning player. So much for a relaxing spring!
I attended the Final Four that year. It was crazy. As the head coach, I got to stay in the main hotel, and as the head coach at UNC, everyone wants a piece of you. You canât walk through the hotel lobby without getting stopped multiple times. It was all-consuming just to get from the elevator to the front door. Fans wanting your autograph and aspiring young coaches wanting a job. Then one person came up to me and said, âYou know Joe is going pro!â
What!
It turns out that Joe had decided to go pro. Itâs funny how the head coach is sometimes the last to know. I thought he should come back and play point guard for us in preparation for his future. Point guard was probably the position he would need to learn how to play for his best chance of having a good NBA career. However, he and his mother decided to enter the draft.
On top of all of that, rumors continued to circulate about the pictures in the basketball facility and of disgruntled former players
This was unsettling, to say the least.
