Once upon a time, a mother and a daughter covered their kitchen wall in sticky notes. Each one held an idea for a new business that would use technology to make a positive impact every day.

The idea they chose was all about using change to make change.

Every day, people buy things. They go to restaurants, toy stores, and pet shops, and order things online. Usually, the cost of a purchase doesn’t add up to an even number, like $10. It’s often more like $10.67. What happens to the extra 33 cents? Sometimes, stores ask if customers want to round up their change to give to charitable causes. But what if we could collect change from a lot of people and use it to help the world? thought Loral and Eishel.

They created an app that invited people to choose a charity, decide how much to give, and round up their extra change. One magical swipe of a credit or debit card and BOOM! Small amounts of change can be combined into big donations to schools, animal shelters, and organizations protecting the environment.

They named their app “Sustainably.”

Other entrepreneurs started to notice Loral and Eishel’s big idea. The pair won lots of awards, including a prize for being the start-up company of the year. Investors decided to provide funds for their business. Loral and Eishel were even able to quit their jobs to work on their app full time. Then they hired a whole team to help make their idea even bigger and better.

Every day, they add more charities to their list and invite more people to donate their change. They are helping the world one penny at a time.
