Chapter 13

Broken

“CAREFUL, DANDELION,” BRONX WARNS, MATERIALIZING next to me to hook his fingers around my elbow. “Porter has been fighting us the whole way home. He’s malnourished, traumatized, and can’t seem to grasp what’s going on. I don’t want you to endanger yourself or our baby girl.”

My heart slides into my stomach at his words, and tears burn in my eyes. I was afraid of something like this. Porter always relied on our family for strength. When we were separated, I feared he’d experience the worst. And now I feel horrible. How could I have been playing these twisted games with the Barons instead of demanding they bring Porter back? I have no excuse. Even if I thought being here with the Barons was worse, because they could turn him against me like Silas and Grayson, it doesn’t make things better. Because if it was bad here, I’m sure that wherever he came from was far more torturous.

“Just let me talk to him,” I say, yanking my elbow free from Bronx’s tight yet gentle hold. I steel myself toward his protectiveness. “He needs me.”

Bronx curls his fingers around the front of my shirt. “I get it, Gwen. I do. But this is not something I want you dealing with. Out of all of the things you choose to be stubborn about, think about the risk that comes with this one. Please. Let your brothers handle it. He could hurt yo—”

“No, I actually don’t think he can. Look at him. I’ve never seen him so thin and weak. If anything, I could accidentally hurt him, so chill. I will be careful,” I say, tugging from his hold. “He’s my brother, Bronx. He needs all three of us. We’re all he has left.”

A rumbling noise escapes Bronx’s mouth, but he doesn’t try to stop me. He doesn’t let me get more than a foot away from him, either. Our shadows blend together as one hulking entity, and I reach my arm behind me to flick him, silently warning him to stay back.

I shuffle the rest of the way to my brother, my legs still weak, and I pray I don’t look like a mess. I shift my gaze to Laredo, sensing his attention on me. “Where did you find him? I thought he was taken out of the territory.”

I had no idea Bronx and Laredo would show up with Porter. That must mean...fuck. Did the Blood Rebels do this? How can he look so filthy and thin if he was with them? They don’t treat dhampir-mutation carriers like prisoners unless they’ve turned against the cause.

“I would think Silas would’ve—”

“I arranged a barter of sorts with some outcasts at the territory border,” Laredo answers, cutting me off. “Your mates and I agreed it would be best not to tell you what we were planning as to not get your hopes up in case.”

My brows pucker, and I swivel, tipping my head up to look at Bronx. “So you lied to me about hunting down the rebel nest?” Annoyance rises through me.
