• Did you know that Joseph Smith said that a person could see God only if he held the Mormon priesthood?

• Did you know that Joseph Smith was not yet ordained in the priesthood at the time he claimed to have seen God in 1820?

• How do you explain this?

It is likely that when Mormons talk to you about God’s alleged physical body, they will argue that God is an exalted man—that at one time He was just like you and me but He progressed to the point of exaltation and godhood. If they bring this up, you’ll want to share with them some Bible verses that affirm God’s unchanging nature. For example:

• Malachi 3:6 quotes God Himself: “I am the LORD, I change not.”

• James 1:17 tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

• Psalm 102:26–27 says, “They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.”

• Psalm 90:2 says, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

• Even the Book of Mormon says God does not change: “I know that God is . . . neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity” (Moroni 8:18).
